.. _R4.10.02: **r4.10.02** Residual error estimator =========================================== **Summary** The residual error estimator makes it possible to estimate the discretization error due to the finite element method on the elements of a 2D or 3D mesh. It is an explicit error estimator involving the residuals of equilibrium equations and jumps in normal constraints at interfaces, unlike the Zhu‑Zienkiewicz estimator, which uses a posteriori stress smoothing technique [:ref:`R4.10.01 `] and [:ref:`bib5 `].
